The capsizing of language

The purists of language, Spanish in this case, we daily regret about the poignant damage that its being done from time to time the reading habits and the economy of immediacy drafted by new technologies. Culprits, among others, about the capsizing is deriving the spoken and written correction.
A compendium of comfort and ignorance or a cause-effect relationship. We can not be completely sure about that, at least in Spain, whereabout the increasingly low readership and shortcomings of the educational system, are making the pretty new generations writting and speaking are getting worse. In regards of that, doesn't help the "anything goes" of social networking, texting or whatsapps, where it seems that doesn't matter to write correctly, letters are lost along the way and the accents evaporate while the punctilious interlocutor eyes keep bleeding.
According to a recent study by the Center for Sociological Research of Spain, 35 percent of Spaniards read "never" or "rarely". Certainly, a dreadful statistics closely and directly related to the crisis of linguistic correctness, the good employee of lexicon, the neat expression...
The clothes make the man and a society that does not read, is not informed and even doesn't manage fluently his own language is sticking a shot in its foot. Therefore, from La Casa Escuela del Español we urge our students to devour books and try to speak with the greatest possible correction. It costs nothing and runs great!
Anyway, these reflections we quick release match perfectly with a recent interview in El Pais to the writer, translator and member of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language, Javier Marías, who considered we "now dabbles in language".
Will we end up finally sinking?

The saying of the week: "Who loves you well, will make you cry"

In La Casa del Español we are determined to convey the maximum possible everything around the Spanish language and it rich culture. And what a better example of the wisdom embodied than the proverbs, sayings and aphorisms that overflow in the Spanish language and have been handed down from generation to generation, as well as "ad aeternum" in masterpieces such as Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. Therefore, we will drop each week on this blog a Spanish or other Spanish-speaking countries saying beside a convenient explanation of its meanings and usages.
To open fire, and once passed the hangover of Saint Valentine, we review a saying which deals with how painful love can be when there is no other solution than to rummage through honesty.
"Who loves you well, will make you cry". Or what comes to mean that true love or affection must identify and correct the mistakes of the loved or loved one, even though it hurts so.
A saying which has other extensions or variants ("who either loves you, will make you suffer, and evil laugh") used in countries like Mexico and Puerto Rico.
We can also find literary references in Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes, and "El Criticón, de Baltasar Gracian:
- Who want you well, makes you mourn -The Quixote.
- ... who spends spends little bent, which makes you mourn you want good: and finally, what one affected and want to look, that's less. Baltasar Gracian, The Criticón-.
A saying we can spin with another: "The truths offend". Both delve into that honesty unequivocally is as necessary as painful but precisely that punitive aspect can serve as convenient purification. Four eyes watch out better than two.

El Quijote, translated into Hindi

El Quijote, the masterpiece of Miguel de Cervantes and of literature in Spanish, can now be read fully in Hindi, which actually is the fourth most spoken language in the world. The Indian academic Vibha Maurya has invested 10 years in translating the majestic work and make it "as close as possible," according to a piece recently published by EFE.
The professor of Hispanic Studies at the University of Delhi and member of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language (RAE) translated the first part of the adventures of the Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote in 2005 and ten years later completed the second, Maurya said during the presentation held recently in New Delhi.
He said this is the first complete and direct translation from Spanish and not from English as had happened so far. He also noted that is written in current Hindi and not the one spoken on the seventeenth century.
El Quijote (1605 and 1615), is one of the most translated books in the world (more than 50 languages), and most have influenced the modern literature. An indispensable classic consisting of two parts and the one which consecrated Miguel de Cervantes as one of the greatest writers ever.
This book tells the adventures and misadventures of the Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote, a knight blinded by an idealized love for her maid (Dulcinea) and the dementia he carries on after devouring novels of chivalry that make him believes he is a wandering hero medieval. His squire, Sancho Panza tries to bring sanity, so their diatribes symbolize the struggle between a prudent realism and a bluntly, alienated idealism.
Don Quixote was the first work that demystified the chivalrous and courteous tradition giving it a satirical and burlesque treatment. Thus, provided the formula of realism as parody and mockery of fantasy and social criticism as well. He also invented the polyphonic novel, due it interprets reality from several points of view.
Also converges on this masterpieces all genres and narrative techniques which eventually are up parodied. All this stuff makes Don Quixote wander between reality and grotesque distortion. Therefore, in Don Quixote and as often happens in real life, things are not what they seem.

González Iñárritu flies with "Birdman"

The Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and his hypnotic "Birdman" flew more than high in the Oscar ceremony held last Sunday. After rubbing the award twice, the brave director and his entourage collected four flashy Oscars (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography), which eloquently speaks of the mastery and originality of the film starred by Michael Keaton, who astonishes with a role likeness of his career.
Four Oscar to reward a film shot in a surprising and continuous sequence which sneaks around the bowels of a theatre through a drum rhythm. An actor rundown and only recognized for his role as a superhero fights to save his career, garner an artistic legacy and get rid of the suit and coat that trips his reasoning.
Riggan -Michael Keaton- suffers a constant inner fight with the character that launched him to fame and who embodies the Hollywood commercialism. He wants to get away from him but the inner voice keeps tormenting the actor. This battle provide the backbone of the plot, centered in the days before the premiere of the play that Riggan stars, directs and adapts. The fears and frustrations of the actor and the desire for artistic recognition punctuate a black comedy that satirizes about the industry of the "star system" and where can also be highlighted the performances of Edward Norton and Emma Stone.
But what Academy has really awarded is the courage in regards the plane sequence, the originality of the script and expertise Iñárritu when squeezing the dramatic side of his actors. Without a doubt, the masterpiece of the Mexican director, who began heading to Hollywood after the success which marked her film debut: "Amores Perros".
This tape already flirted with the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2001. Meanwhile, in 2007, another tale of interwoven stories, Babel, also stood at the gates of the statuette, this time the Best Picture and Best Director. Biutiful, in 2011, failed as wellpr to boost the award for best foreign film.
So, the Mexican director, who has obtained the success that he had been prowling with a critique of the "establishment" of Hollywood and tortuous twilight of the "celebrities", used his moment of glory to "spank" the Governments of Mexico and US. "I want to take a second to dedicate this award to my compatriots in Mexico. I pray we can find and have the government we deserve and that the generation that is living in this country -for USA- can be treated with the same respect and dignity that the people who came before and helped to build this country of immigrants", he said. Before, the actor Sean Penn, who presented the award to best director, ran a joke which Iñárritu downplayed.
